5050 Taper Lock Bushings

A tapered locking bushing, also known as a tapered bushing or tapered mating bushing, is a locking mechanism typically used in power transmissions to position pulleys, sprockets, and couplings to shafts. Taper Lock bushings are pre-drilled and keyed to match the desired shaft and keyway diameter. The outside of the bushing is tapered to match the component bore to be located on the shaft. Taper Lock Bushings are manufactured from precision cast iron and machined to a high-quality finish. It is computer etched for easy size identification and is available in steel or stainless steel upon request. Tapered bushings are available in imperial and metric sizes from 0.375" to 5" and from 9mm to 125mm. All quality manufacturers will also provide an installation instruction sheet with the bushing. Our bushings are manufactured in their full line of bushings with an even number of holes, the fourth balance hole. This design is dynamically balanced for high-speed applications and is available in sizes ranging from 1008 to 6050.

Installation

1. Clean all oil, dirt, and paint from the shaft, bushing holes, bushing exterior, and bores of components (sprockets, pulleys, etc.).
2. Insert the bushing into the assembly. Match hole patterns, not threaded holes (each hole is threaded on one side only).
3. Thread the set screw or cap screw into the half-threaded hole shown below. Install the assembly on the shaft.
4. Alternately set the torque setting or cap screw* to the recommended torque setting in the table below.
5. Fill all unoccupied holes with grease.

Removal

1. Remove any retaining or cap screws.
2. Insert the set screw or cap screw into the above hole.
3. To reinstall, complete all five (5) installation instructions.

Bushings are an important part of a vehicle's suspension system. They reduce road noise, vibration and harshness. Over time, the bushing may begin to deteriorate. Exposure to road salt, heat, and pollutants can all cause premature bushing wear. It is vital to replace them when needed to prevent damage to the joint. A good option is a brand with in-house features tailored to the app.
The bushing helps prevent uneven movement between the two parts. If you're driving on rough roads, you may hear a jingling sound, or a rattling sound when you turn the wheel or brake hard. You may even notice a noticeable loss of steering ability. However, the failure of the rear suspension bushings is less noticeable and likely won't affect handling. A bushing failure can result in poor braking and handling.
Depending on how the casing is insulated, you can find several varieties. For example, air-insulated bushings use air at atmospheric pressure to protect the center conductor. Oil-filled bushings, on the other hand, are insulated with electrical grade mineral oil. Either way, oil is shared between casing and equipment. There are also bushings that use a grounded shield to prevent electric field interference.
A good way to tell if bushings are causing noise is to check your car's suspension. Usually, these noises are caused by worn bushings. If you hear squeaks or other noises while driving, this is a bushing. If you notice these, the problem could be a weakened spring or a worn bushing. If the noise persists, you may need to replace the entire suspension or just the bushings.
Another common cause of steering and suspension problems is control arm bushing failure. Poor control arm bushings can cause the car to vibrate excessively and rattle its suspension components. In addition to this, poor control arm bushings can tear and wear from excessive vibration absorption. This can lead to increased vibration and worse tire wear. Additionally, the bad bushing can cause the entire control arm to fail, which will result in additional cost and labor.
